Favorite Tips for a Productive Creative Practice

1. Pay real attention to when you feel most creative and when you don't. It's crucial to know what works for you.

2. There is no right or wrong when it comes to your creative practice as long as it gets the work done...and don't let anyone tell you differently!

3. Expose  yourself to new ideas regularly. One of my favorite ways of doing so is to watch TED talks--15 minute free videos from exceptional folks in all  professions, each talking about a single "idea that's worth sharing."

4. Give yourself permission to clean upyour messy house, office or studio—but only after you've met your "creative commitment" for the day.

5. Get feedback in ways you plan, not in response to random requests. Showing your work too early or to the wrong people is a proven creativity-killer.

6. Learn about the creative practicies of artists beyond your own particular medium or genre. I love choreographer Twyla Tharp's book The Creative Habit, for example, precisely because dancing is so different from writing.

7. Make it your rule to do spend more time actually producing creative work than going to conferences, reading books, or talking about it!
